Summer is the sun season, but it does not have to be tough on your skin. The heat, humidity, and additional sun exposure can lead to a variety of skin issues, from sunburn to acne. But do not worry—with some simple changes to your skincare routine, you can have glowing, healthy skin all summer.
Keep Your Skin Glow All Summer!
Your Best Friend: Sunscreen
In summer, sun protection is essential as it prevents your skin from the strong sun's UV radiation, which causes sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least an SPF of 30 that best suits your skin type—oil-free for oily skin, moisturizing for dry skin, and mineral-based for sensitive skin. Apply it generously to all exposed areas 15 minutes before going outside, and don’t forget often-overlooked spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Stay Hydrated Inside and Out
Summer heat and sun will dry your skin, making it dehydrated and irritated, so do drink plenty of water on the inside and also apply moisturizing cream on the outside.
Internally, consume at least 8 glasses of water daily and add hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and celery to your diet. Externally, use a light, oil-free moisturizer that will lock in moisture without pore-clogging analysis; seek out products with hyaluronic acid, which holds water in the skin.

Gently Exfoliate
Summer can bring sweat and oil production up, which clogs pores and leads to breakouts, so mild exfoliation is required. Exfoliate every week or two with a mild exfoliant to remove dead skin cells—choose between a physical exfoliant like a mild scrub or a chemical exfoliant like an alpha-hydroxy acid. Avoid harsh scrubs that will irritate your skin, and exfoliate at night to allow your skin time to heal overnight.

Eat a Skin-Friendly Diet
Your nutrition plays a significant part in the health of your skin during the summer. Consume antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, leafy greens, and berries to protect your skin against free radical damage. Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish and flaxseeds also help your skin barrier function become healthy and resilient.

Protect Yourself with Clothing and Shade
Though sunscreen is essential, there are other measures to take to guard against sun damage and heat spots on the skin. Adorn your face and eyes with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses that protect against UV radiation, choose light cotton sarees or handloom sarees and dress in lightweight, well-ventilated clothing to allow for airflow and avoid sweating acne. Whenever possible, avoid direct sunlight, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., to allow your skin to rest from the sun's radiation.
